Queen of Denmark
Margarethe II. ()
Caroline Mathilde was the daughter of Augusta, Princess of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, and Frederick Louis, the Prince of Wales. She married Christian VII in 1766 and was crowned the Queen of Denmark-Norway in 1767. This marriage ended in divorce in 1772 and she was banished to Celle as a result of an affair with her doctor Johann Friedrich Struensee. Her son Friedrich VI later became the King of Denmark-Norway.
Ingrid of Sweden, who married Friedrich IX, King of Sweden, in 1935, also has German roots. Ingrid’s mother Margaret, Crown Princess of Sweden, descended from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Her grandparents were Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
Today’s Queen of Denmark, Margarethe II, is Margaret’s granddaughter and her descendants are therefore also from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
