Das Barocke Universum
Casemates
Friedenstein Palace is surrounded by one of Central Germany’s strongest Baroque fortifications – the casemates. The casemates situated under the park can be visited on an approx. 300 m long underground tour thanks to the commitment of Gotha’s architectural historian Udo Hopf. There are embrasure chambers, rifle galleries, back defences and much more to discover. Due to their superbly preserved state, the casemates enhance the importance of the magnificent palace in terms of architectural history even more. A guided tour through the fortifications that have remained unchanged for more than 350 years is a unique experience for all ages.
