Friedenstein Palace - Palace chapel
One of the palace chapel’s features is the portal dated 1553/54, which originates from the period of the previous building, the Grimmenstein. As you walk through the round arch portal into the palace chapel you are overcome by how impressive and beautiful it is, as there is absolutely no indication of this from outside.
The palace chapel extends over two floors and the entire width of the north wing inside. The impressive ceiling paintings by Seivert Lammers, which are supported by colossal Corinthian pillars, could not be more beautifully portrayed in the ensemble with the pulpit and richly ornamented organ behind it. The palace chapel was completed in 1697 under Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and has hardly been changed at all since then.
